I had the lovely opportunity to interview a Ruth King staff member, Ms. Chan. I now know some cool and some surprising things about her. I have asked her five questions and here are the answers.
Ms. Chan teaches Grade 2 and it is her fourth year working at Ruth King! Before coming to Ruth King, she worked at Canadian Tire (I was very surprised!)
Ms. Chan’s favourite part about working at our school are the kids, the staff and the families.
When she isn’t working, she likes to paddleboard and work in her garden. Her favourite book is Eyes That Kiss in the Corners. This book is teaching us that everyone is beautiful.

History of Rock Your Mocs
Indigenous people from coast to coast to coast are rocking their moccasins at school, at the office and in communities this week amid a worldwide campaign to promote cultural pride.
Rock Your Mocs was started in 2011 by Jessica Jaylyn Atsye of Laguna Pueblo, N.M., and beginning in 2013 has been organized by event producer Melissa Sanchez as a worldwide movement every Nov. 15. Schools can choose any day during the week to have their day.
Atsye was just 19 when she started a Facebook event for her friends to wear moccasins. It went viral, and has grown each year. She said “Rock Your Mocs is about unifying Indigenous Peoples globally through social media, promoting cultural pride, and showcasing the diversity of nations.
It paves the road for younger generations not to be ashamed of where they come from, balancing how modern society is and our traditional and cultural ways of living.”
How to join in
- Wear your moccasins if you have them
- Take a photo, video or story and upload to social media using the hashtag #RockYourMocs
- Click on the hashtags to see what’s happening worldwide

Mr. Siu is a Music teacher at Ruth King Elementary School. He started working here at the start of October. Before he came to our school, Mr. Siu worked in Toronto, Ontario! He was a Music teacher and tuba player! I think the tuba is hard to play; it also looks hard to carry. Mr. Siu’s favorite thing to do is either to train for marathons or hang out with his beloved family! His favorite thing about working at our school are the students. Mr.Siu’s favorite book is Dare to Lead by Brené Brown, but he has a lot of other favorite books.

This week, we would like to spotlight Ms. Shannon.
Her role at Ruth King Elementary is as an Education Assistant (EA) and she started at our school in November 2021.
Before she became an EA, she worked for 16 years as an early childhood educator assistant at Happy Campers Childcare. Ms. Shannon wanted to change jobs and start working with older children. She enjoys helping kids that are in need and kids that need more help!
When Ms. Shannon is not at work, she is at home with her two sons, dog and husband. They enjoy spending time out in nature, walking their dog or hiking. She doesn’t read much but if she does, she likes to read Robert Munch books with her sons.
