Staff Spotlight

This week, we would like to spotlight Ms. Shannon.

Her role at Ruth King Elementary is as an Education Assistant (EA) and she started at our school in November 2021.

Before she became an EA, she worked for 16 years as an early childhood educator assistant at Happy Campers Childcare. Ms. Shannon wanted to change jobs and start working with older children. She enjoys helping kids that are in need and kids that need more help!

When Ms. Shannon is not at work, she is at home with her two sons, dog and husband. They enjoy spending time out in nature, walking their dog or hiking. She doesn’t read much but if she does, she likes to read Robert Munch books with her sons.

Happy Monday Everyone!  Thank you all for an amazing first week back to school.  It seems to have gone fairly well and most of the children were happy to be back.  It was definitely overwhelming for a few new students but that is to be expected.

Before School Program (hours 7:30 to 8:30am)

This program includes snack/breakfast foods and is been a drop-in program.  We will be asking you to register for the program as we need to keep track of numbers and who is in the program for contact tracing.  We will have a form to fill out when you arrive.

Joanne Irving and Karen MacKay are the Before School Program Coordinators.

Lunch Program (hours 11:55am to 12:10pm)

This program will run five days a week.  Forms were sent home on Friday for you to opt into the program. Please fill out the form and return it to your child’s teacher with the payment that you can afford.

Karen MacKay is the Lunch Program Coordinator.

Protocols for Health & Safety

If your child is sick, please keep them home and monitor their symptoms.  In the event that your child is sick, please email your child’s teacher directly.  Teachers should be reaching out via email this week so that you have their email address.

Please let your child’s teacher know if your child has allergies, asthma inhalers, epi-pens etc.  Although you have filled out forms indicating these things, it is always important to talk to your child’s teacher directly so that nothing gets missed.  Please also inform your child’s teacher if there are two households and the schedule for when your child will be with which parent.  Thank you in advance for this.

Daily Health Checks and Other Consents

Please fill out the Parent Consent Forms online as soon as possible.  This is a requirement for your child to attend school.  Here is the link below and a list of all consents that you must complete.https://consent.sd62.bc.ca/apps/OnlineConsent  Thank you for doing this.

The school grounds will be open for everyone this year.  Parents, when you are dropping off and picking up your child, please make sure you park on Matson Street.  Each classroom teacher will have a designated line up spot.  These line up spots are painted with white hearts on the playground.  Have your child show you where their line up spot is.

School Supplies and Food

  • Please send your child to school with a full, spill/leak-proof water bottlethey can have at their table or desk.
  • Students will need snacks for recess and a bagged lunch please.
  • Please send a pair of inside shoesfor school.  Intermediate students included.  Let’s try to keep our new gym floor sparkling and our hallways and learning environment clean.

  • LABEL everything please… this includes jackets, clothing, lunch kits, school supplies etc.  So many things go to the Thrift Stores every year because we do not know who belong to the items in our “Lost & Found.”

If your child is Late for School

If your child arrives late for school, all our outside doors are locked at this time except the front door.  You must bring your child to the front doors.  They can grab a “Welcome” pass, sign in at the office and then head to class. This includes the portables because Jodi Ward, our secretary, will have to mark your child as late rather than absent.  Thank you for your attention to this policy.

Standing Reminders:

  • We are working on student placements for next year. If you know you will be moving over the summer, please let me know as soon as possible.  At the moment for next year, we have 14 spaces left at Ruth King.
  • Please remember to do the “Daily Health Check” with your child and keep them home if your child is sick or displaying any symptoms.
  • Staff parking is an issue for us when parents are parked in the designated stalls on Matson Road. Please refrain from parking in these stalls when dropping off your child.  Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
  • Please refrain from riding bikes, scooters, and skateboards on the playground.
  • Please remember not to bring dogs onto the Ruth King grounds as it is a dog free zone. Thank you.
